Picking a shore
The lake is big enough that where you stay decides your trip. The North Shore, Incline Village, Crystal Bay, Kings Beach and Tahoe City, is the easy-going side: public beaches at Kings Beach and at Commons Beach in Tahoe City, the Truckee River leaving the lake at the Tahoe City dam, and Northstar and Palisades Tahoe within a short drive for skiing.
The West Shore, Homewood and Tahoma, is the quiet side, with Sugar Pine Point State Park’s beach and trails at hand and Emerald Bay further south. Truckee is not on the lake at all, and that is its appeal: a historic downtown along Donner Pass Road, Donner Lake for swimming and paddling, the Donner Summit resorts one way and Northstar a short drive down Highway 267 the other.
Summer
Summer is beaches, the bike path along the West Shore from Tahoe City to Sugar Pine Point, rafting the Truckee River from Tahoe City down to River Ranch, and long evenings on a deck. Parking at the popular beaches fills by mid-morning on weekends, so the homes that matter most in July are the ones you can walk or ride from.
Winter
From November to April these are snow homes. Interstate 80 over Donner Summit and the lake highways get chain controls in storms, sometimes for days at a time, and a vehicle that can handle snow is part of the plan. Bring layers for the walk from the car, and read each home’s page for its parking and fireplace details before you commit to a January week.
Our local team looks after these homes year-round, and the number you call during a storm reaches them, not a switchboard.
Rules that come with a mountain rental
Placer County and the Town of Truckee permit every short-term rental on the California side, and Washoe County does the same in Nevada. Each permit sets an occupancy limit, parking rules and quiet hours, and the sleeping capacity on a home’s page is the number its permit allows.
Bears are real neighbours here. Trash goes in the bear-resistant bin, doors stay closed, and food stays out of cars. It sounds like a lot until you are there, and then it is simply how the mountains work.

- What does it mean to book a Tahoe home direct with Duvoire?
- These are homes we manage ourselves, and booking direct means booking with our team on duvoire.com rather than through a listing site. You choose dates, the booking site shows the whole cost, nightly rate, cleaning, any fees and tax, and you pay that total. The people who take your booking are the people who look after the house.
- Which shore should I stay on?
- For beaches and restaurants within reach, the North Shore. For quiet and a state park at the end of the road, the West Shore around Tahoma. For a real town with a downtown, Donner Lake and the Donner Summit ski areas, Truckee. Each home’s page names its town, and this page groups them by area.
- Do I need chains or a four-wheel-drive?
- In winter, yes, plan on one or the other. Chain controls on Interstate 80 and the lake highways are routine during storms, and mountain driveways hold snow long after the roads are clear. Between November and April, treat a snow-capable vehicle as part of the booking.
- How many people can stay in a home?
- The sleeping capacity on each home’s page is the occupancy its county or town permit allows, and the booking site will not accept a larger party. Children count toward it. Two families travelling together should look at the larger homes or book two.
- Can I bring a dog to Tahoe?
- Some of these homes welcome pets and some do not, and each home’s page says which under its amenities. Where dogs are welcome, remember that bears are not impressed by them, and the same rules about food and trash apply.
